Autonomous weapons, also known as killer robots, are weapons that use artificial intelligence (AI) to identify, target, and attack enemies without direct human intervention. The idea of autonomous weapons raises serious ethical concerns, particularly around the question of whether it is moral to delegate decisions about life and death to machines. Here are some of the key ethical issues surrounding the use of autonomous weapons in military technology.

  1. Accountability: Autonomous weapons lack human decision-making capabilities, which makes it difficult to hold anyone accountable for their actions. If a machine kills someone, who is responsible? This lack of accountability raises serious ethical concerns.
  2. Human Rights: Autonomous weapons also raise concerns about human rights violations. Because machines lack the ability to recognize human rights and to make ethical judgments, they could be used to carry out atrocities without any human intervention or oversight.
  3. Military Strategy: There is a risk that the use of autonomous weapons could fundamentally alter military strategy, with machines making decisions based on data and algorithms rather than human judgment. This could lead to unforeseen consequences and could make conflicts more unpredictable and dangerous.
